is live in san francisco with more on how students will honor the victims in newtown -- newtown, today. >> reporter: well, they plan to stand in solidarity with the students by wearing their school colors. behind me here, you can see there is a fence up around this school. that, of course, is gonna be the topic of discussion among a lot of school administrators. many schools have fences designed to keep intruders out. but if they get in, it's questionable how far they can get. california's superintendent expects more discussions about this. he's alerted all 1100 public school districts to reskew safety plans -- review safety plans. >> you minimize the risk as best you can. we can't live in fear and have every school be a closed fortress of some kind. it's a place of learning. >> reporter: some parents say sandy hook elementary had a locked door through the school but a gunman shot his way through it. state legislators say this is vulnerable. >> it's not gonna stop somebody if that's their intention. they obviously think about it and then go do it. >> reporter: as important as security,

incase of the flooding but they closed it. >> to ktvu's lorraine blanco who is live in san francisco where the power has been out for most of the day in the sunset district. >> reporter: right now dozens of people are without power. pg&e crews hard at work trying to restore power. for crews across the bay area, the wild weather left quite a mess. >> reporter: heavy saturation toppled this pine tree today. blocking two lanes and blocking up computers in daily city. firefighters helping the chp. no one was hurt but it has been a while. >> our crews have been working all night. calls been very busy. 30 minutes sleep last night. very busy. >> reporter: in san francisco heavy winds and rain snapped this power pole before sun rise in the sunset district. >> when it happened there were tons of sparks and lightning. >> reporter: at one point 8400 customers lost power here. pg&e said they have been working all day to repair. >> the stuff in the freezer might be going. i missed the football game. not too bad. >> reporter: they agree. although the creek is high, it is fun to play in the puddle.
>>> the san francisco health department issues a warning to gay men about the spread of a communicable disease. good evening i'm ken wayne. >> and i'm julie haener. it is a meningitis outbreak but it's not happening here. still the health center takes it serious enough to issue a warning. >> reporter: they say an unusually high number of meningitis cases have been reported until the brooklyn area and it's affecting gay men. san francisco may be thousands of miles from the big apple but health officials here worry that a quick plane ride might land bay area travelers right in the heart of meningitis outbreak in new york city. >> we know there's lots of travel between the two cities. >> reporter: dr. susan phillips is with the san francisco health department. she says new york has had 16 cases of menengococal disease. the cases involve men in areas of brooklyn who are have had intimate contact with other men. >> it's due to a bacterium and it is passed by a very close personal contacts. secretions of any kind including saliva. >> reporter: gay men traveling to new york
. napa35, san francisco 46, san jose 37 degrees. definitely off to a cold start this saturday morning. forecast headlines for today, shower developing, it'll be chilly. tomorrow just a chance of a few sprinkles and the highest chance would be in the north bay, especially up toward sonoma. we are tracking multiple storms on the long range weather maps. at least for today here is the system we are tracking, the sources rainfall around eureka. already cloud cover into the area and that rainfall not to far behind. here is the forecast model. we will take it into the morning about an hour from now at eight mostly cloudy and cool. temperatures from around 30 to 45 and then by the afternoon, by 12:00 showers developing especially up in the northern half of the area. you will see more activity off shore and then throughout the afternoon hours off and on showers likely and temperatures only making it into the low to mid50s. these numbers not a big change from yesterday in places like fairfield and antioch. most of the afternoon in the upper 40s. briefly topping out at 50. san jose 54, san mate

:05. sentencing today for a san francisco school cafeteria worker convicted of several sexual assaults. he was convicted of attacking three women in the mission district last year. one of them was beaten unconscious. he could get life in prison. the fifth suspect charged in an attack that left one man dead and a woman badly beaten is set to face a judge today. they were found bound and bagged in the middle of the street. the victims and the suspects knew each other. the final suspect is facing charges of accessory to murder and conspiracy to destroy evidence. >>> new this morning there is more fallout from the royal phone hoax. about a dozen workers at the australian radio station behind the prank call had been moved to safe houses. ten radio executives now have around the clock bodyguards because of death threats. meanwhile british investigators are disclosing more information about three suicide notes left by the nurse. two were found in the room while the other was among her personal possessions. one note dealt with the phone call. another focused on her funeral. the third criticized ho

of people in san francisco are looking for a new home after a large fire destroyed three apartment buildings and damaged a fourth. that fire started inside an apartment on 23rd street near cap street around 9:45 yesterday morning. the smoke could be seen from some of our traffic cameras in san francisco. as you can see there the fire was out of control when croups arrive add the scene. >> all units on scene did a great job. it was a tough fire. they had to get in there and fight it aggressively. >> 100 firefighters responded to the scene. one was transported to the hospital because of exhaustion. no other injuries were reported. the american red cross provided hotel accommodations for 19 people last night. s cause of the fire has not been determined. >>> dianne feinstein says she is optimistic that some type of agreement will be reached to avert the fiscal cliff. both houses of congress will reconvene today. the senate is expected to work two hours from now. while president obama wants a tax increase for those earning $250,000 there is a proposal on the table that raises that income threshol
